This year’s Penn Endo Global Symposium in Vienna from 4th to 6th December was a recent opportunity for endodontics experts from all over the world to meet. The focus was on exchanging the latest findings and scientific concepts in the fields of orthograde and surgical endodontics.

“Around 400 participants from 40 different countries seized the opportunity to find out more about the latest topics and trends in a range of selected presentations”, said Prof. DDr. Christof Pertl, President of the Austrian Society for Endodontology (ÖGE) and co-organizer of the international symposium in Vienna. In addition, the event offered practical insights in the scope of the Endo-Circle training sessions.

First-rate presentations on current topics from research and practice

Visitors had the opportunity to choose from an extensive programme held over the three days. While the “Young Researchers Forum” at the Bernhard Gottlieb University Clinic of Dentistry, Vienna, offered interesting talks by the next generation of dentists on Thursday afternoon, the Friday morning was all about the Endo-Circle training sessions. Eight workshops focused on selected product highlights from W&H. One of the main topics was the specific use of the Tigon+ piezo scaler and the corresponding working tips in the field of orthograde endodontics.

In addition, practical application scenarios were used to demonstrate the advantages of the Piezomed surgical instrument. The focus was on apical resection with retrograde channel preparation. Under the expert supervision of Udo Hörmann and Andreas Lette, both of whom are responsible for Strategic Product Management at W&H, participants had the chance not only to try W&H products out for themselves on extracted teeth, animal jaws and root canal models, but also to have their important specialist questions answered.

On Friday afternoon and Saturday, first-rate presentations on current topics from research and practice by internationally acclaimed experts – including from the University of Pennsylvania – were on the agenda. “For example, we addressed the question of how teeth which have undergone root canal treatment behave in other dental disciplines and what their prognosis is. We also discussed to what extent teeth that have undergone root canal treatment can be used in orthodontics. What problems arise with teeth that have undergone root canal treatment during restorative treatment? What prognoses can be made in the case of combined periodontic-endodontic lesions in day-to-day clinical practice? And much, much more...”, explained Prof. DDr. Christof Pertl.

Piezo surgery: live operation

A particular highlight of this year’s Penn Endo Global Symposium was the 3D transmission of a live operation by Prof. Dr. Syngcuk Kim, Louis I. Grossmann Professor and Department Chairman for Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. The surgery demonstrated the use of the Piezomed for preparing the apical resection and retrograde preparation of two resected molar roots. He was supported by Andreas Lette (Strategic Product Management, W&H), who assisted him during the operation. “The live operation was the highlight of the event and was dedicated to piezo surgery. The operation was a complete success. The piezo surgery with the new W&H instrument went brilliantly and I think that it was a successful weekend for the companies that took part, for us as the organizers and, of course, also the participants”, said Prof. DDr. Pertl.

The specialist visitors to the Penn Endo Global Symposium seemed to be more than impressed when it came to the first-rate programme. The successful combination of academic and practical insights into modern endodontics made it possible to communicate the latest trends and explore specialist discussions successfully.
