Testing the Tigon+ piezo scaler

With the new Tigon+, W&H is now offering relaxed dental treatment that is optimally tailored to the needs of patient and dentist alike. The design process focused on well-being and individual treatment modalities. Dr Yasin Aktas, Director of Periodontics and Endodontics at the Kaiserbergklinik, is impressed by the features of the new piezo scaler and describes his experience with it:

The objective of every periodontic treatment is the complete removal of calculus. In some cases, this proves more difficult than expected, because calculus can adhere extremely strongly to the surface of the root. In addition to traditional hand instruments, the periodontist also has a range of electronic systems available to ensure complete removal of calculus.

We have been using the W&H Tigon+ piezo scaler for prophylactic and periodontic treatment for some time now.
When selecting a new piezo scaler system, we took the following factors into account:

  • Good cleaning performance
  • Ergonomic design
  • Internal irrigation
  • Efficient lighting system

We use the LUZEP system (Laser-Assisted Tooth Retention Periodontitis Treatment) in our department. This involves pretreatment with the Tigon+ before sterilising the interior of the pocket with a diode laser and expanding it slightly. The Tigon+ handpiece with the 5-LED ring has proven extremely useful, because it illuminates the floor of the pocket and allows the periodontist visual control of the root planing process. Any calculus that is still present can then be removed efficiently.

The Tigon+ periodontic attachment has a slender design, which avoids unnecessary injury to the gums. The piezo scaler can also be used to clean regions that are difficult to reach. The heat generated by electronic systems makes internal irrigation essential, but, particularly in periodontics, patients appreciate it greatly if the temperature of the irrigation fluid is regulated.

With its integrated heating system, the Tigon+ supplies warm irrigation fluid, which prevents irritation of sensitive teeth. The availability of five preset treatment programmes, such as prophylaxis, periodontics, endodontics, restoration and a customisable programme, gives us optimal support for efficient treatment. The scaler power can also be adjusted to our requirements with three different modes.

In my experience, the special 1I Implant-Clean tip offered by W&H is particularly suitable for peri-implantitis prophylaxis. In the past we had to work with plastic curettes in this area, which could not be used for thorough cleaning. The Implant-Clean tip, an attachment with a special sheath of high-performance plastic, offers good cleaning results combined with gentle treatment of the implant surface, i.e., it does not damage the implant. As such it is ideal for suppressing peri-implant processes. We also use Airflow as support in this area.

Conclusion

Using the Tigon+ has enabled us to improve our work processes in the field of prophylaxis and periodontics. The five preset programmes have enabled us to reduce the treatment time significantly and at the same time the treatment is less traumatic and more relaxing for the patient. In particular, the heated irrigation liquid, which prevents irritation of sensitive teeth, has proven to be a significant advantage.
