Young people experiencing technology

Just before Christmas, around 25 pupils from the secondary school in Walserfeld had a chance to take a peek behind the scenes at the world of dental technology. On 20th December 2012, as part of the "SPICI – Successful Stories about Professions in Cool Industries" event, W&H Dentalwerk invited the young people to discover their technical abilities and interests. A range of specially designed experiments gave the pupils the possibility to try out the technologies and products for themselves and discover interesting careers at the same time.

Launched by the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) in 2008, the "SPICI" concept has been well received by a large number of companies in the state of Salzburg. The aim of the project is to get young people – both boys and girls – interested in technology from an early age.

Due to the wide range of technical careers it offers, promoting the next generation of professionals is also the focus of the cooperation with schools at W&H. The "SPICI" event offers the company a special opportunity to make the pupils more aware of interesting technical careers in the dental industry and allow them to exchange their experiences directly with the W&H experts.

Technical careers up close

Following a presentation introducing the company, the pupils had the chance to try out a wide variety of technical aspects in a range of practical experiments. For example, in addition to the professional assembly of W&H contra-angle handpieces, the agenda also included the application of W&H dental products at special workstations.

The pupils were also able to discover how the scientific and technical theory they learn in school, such as calculating the speed of sound, can be put into practice and applied in real life. A tour of the factory gave the youngsters added insights into state-of-the-art, computer-assisted CNC manufacturing technology employed at W&H.

The young visitors had a chance to try out the W&H precision instruments for themselves at a range of special workstations.

With the aim of making young people more aware of technical careers and as part of the "SPICI" project, W&H regularly invites pupils from the upper years of local schools to learn how the theory they learn in class can be put into practice.
