Competitive e-sports in Bürmoos
E-sports is booming – and even medical technology specialists like W&H are getting involved. Eight players, two teams and one huge challenge: The W&H Rocket League company teams, the W&H Sharks and W&H Tigers, have both qualified for the Nitro League 2023.
What began two years ago with participation in the e-sports festival Level Up Salzburg has since evolved into a pioneering corporate project. W&H is thus the first company in the DACH region to offer its own employees the chance to get a taste of competitive gaming. Following some intense training and team-building activities, the two W&H Rocket League teams joined 220 teams in the qualifying tournaments for the Nitro League and are now raring to go and start competing in the league.

Since 1998 W&H has prioritised team organisation, with a focus on small agile teams that take responsibility for their own tasks and work together to complete them. And these are exactly what are required for Rocket League. There is also a high level of motivation required in both environments, making e-sports the perfect activity to complement the employees’ responsibilities at work.
Interactive, multi-directional communication with the gaming community is the main focus.
“With our investment in the dynamic e-sports market, which is becoming more and more popular, particularly among young people, we are creating a new link to Generation Z and Alpha. The aim is to attract young, committed team players to W&H”, explains Anita Thallinger, Director Marketing at W&H.

“We still can’t believe that we have made it into division 7! Now we are even more excited to show what we can do in the upcoming tournament matches,” says an excited Lukas Jungbauer, Surface Technician at W&H and team member of the W&H Sharks. Teams that are new to the Nitro League normally begin in the Starter Division, but the W&H Sharks made it into the 7th Division straight from the qualifying tournament.
“The W&H Sharks and the W&H Tigers have only recently begun training together as a team. In this time, we have mainly been covering the basics and improving the communication between the players. Ongoing training is particularly important in the Rocket League, in order to master the car and the mechanics”, says Milos Pavlovic, CEO & Founder of Morekats.
The excitement is also palpable for e-sports youngsters, the W&H Tigers. “The first match was amazing. It’s really nerve-racking when you enter the virtual lobby. Every second counts, and you have to remember the right moves from your training”, explains Julian Pfeil, metalworker at W&H and team member of the W&H Tigers, describing the excitement in the build-up to a match.
