A handpiece’s true value is reflected in its maintenance needs
Dr David Hagen operates two dental care centres in Cologne under the brand name ‘Welldent’. The team currently consists of 26 dentists, oral surgeons, and orthodontists, resulting in a correspondingly high demand for instruments. To address this need economically, the owner of the medical care centres deliberately chose the Synea series from W&H.
- Cologne, Germany
“As a medical care centre, we offer a full range of services. Since our founding in 1999, we’ve relied on W&H products for surgical procedures. For general dentistry, we initially used a different manufacturer. Driven by economic considerations, we’ve tried to streamline repairs in recent years. That’s how the Austrian manufacturer W&H came into play – recommended by our repair service. W&H has been touted as reliable and fair-priced repairs – that proved true. As an MVZ, we use numerous straight and contra-angle handpieces that simply have to work. After all, many hands always mean a lot of wear and tear. With W&H, we perform significantly better than with our previous supplier. We rarely have devices still under warranty when they need repairs. With other companies, defects were common within just a few months. This solid manufacturing quality also impresses us in the surgical field: some straight and contra-angle handpieces have been in use for 10 to 15 years.”
Synea's low repair rate is convincing
"In a busy dental practice, repairs are inevitable. A contra-angle handpiece must withstand long preparation times, frequent reprocessing procedures, and sometimes it even falls to the ground – this is part of the normal routine. What’s important is what happens next. In our case: if a contra-angle handpiece needs repair, we pack it with the corresponding repair order and send it to the service centre by mail. Thanks to complete cost transparency, we don’t face any surprises in terms of pricing, and within three to four working days, the contra-angle handpiece is back in the practice. If a repair is not worthwhile, this is communicated openly as well. For me, repairability is always synonymous with sustainability. I know of manufacturers who handle this in exactly the opposite way within their business model."
Reliable everyday companions
"A red high-speed handpiece is a red high-speed handpiece; I’m pragmatic about that and can say that, as a practitioner, you can basically manage with any. It’s the nuances that make the difference, and those are exactly what matter when making purchasing decisions. Functionally, I appreciate the small head size. The straight and contra-angle handpieces from W&H are aesthetically pleasing, feel solid and high-quality, and have a good weight – not too heavy, not too light. But let’s be honest: a high-speed handpiece isn’t a piece of jewellery, but a tool that has to perform at its best day in and day out. Out of conviction, I’m happy to say: with W&H, you’re making a very good choice in the field of dentistry and surgery."
