Minimally invasive oral surgery and implantology

Oral surgery and implantological procedures always entail a certain amount of stress for the patient. Keeping this as low as possible requires a high degree of skill, minimally invasive methods and state-of-the-art, perfectly calibrated technology. After all, the foundations for optimal healing are laid during the operation itself.

Minimally invasive surgery thanks to technological precision: Just like doctors from any other discipline, implantologists and oral surgeons need more than just a steady hand if they are to perform their miracles with as little damage to the remaining substances as possible – they require constant continuing professional training and reliable technical equipment in order to guarantee a low-risk procedure and a problem-free healing process.

Product expertise translates to treatment success

In this respect, W&H, a family-owned company established for more than 125 years, has been supporting dentists throughout that time. The company has its headquarters in Bürmoos, Austria, and produces dental instruments and devices which facilitate daily work in the practice and make the treatment as pleasant as possible for the patient. In addition to the turbines, straight and contra-angle handpieces optimized over the years for every indication, the W&H range also includes a variety of drive units, scalers and systems for reprocessing medical devices.

In addition to the Piezomed, Implantmed and Elcomed surgical units, W&H also offers a wide range of saw, straight and contra-angle handpieces specially designed for implantology and oral surgery. Whilst these instruments offer impressive ergonomics, precision and flexibility, they are primarily characterised by their motor performance and user-friendliness. The clear layout of the surgical units makes operation quick and easy for the practice team.

Piezomed: ultrasound in oral surgery
Piezomed: ultrasound in oral surgery

In recent years, piezo technology has enjoyed great advances as a basic technology for minimally invasive surgical procedures. In this technique, the dental instrument is made to oscillate with high-frequency microvibrations, enabling extremely precise incisions. In contrast to the rotating milling cutters formerly employed, the soft tissue remains undamaged when the innovative ultrasound technology is employed.

In the Piezomed unit, W&H offers dentists a great everyday assistant for the practice, which optimally utilizes the advantages of this technology and thus allows minimally invasive treatment without substantial loss of bone. The targeted removal of bone reduces the risk of complications and accelerates postoperative bone regeneration. The patient suffers less swelling and pain. The efficient cooling system right at the tip of the Piezomed instruments, which rules out thermomechanical material stress, also contributes to reducing pain.

When the total of 24 surgical instruments are used correctly, Piezomed offers a high degree of safety: The unit automatically detects which attachment is being used and assigns it to the correct power class. The individual performance parameters can also be adjusted manually within the detected group. Piezomed saves the last used setting each time and also offers three operating modes: “Power”, “Smooth” and “Basic”, which adjust the response of the instrument tip to pressure.

Intelligent operating system facilitates workflow

The Implantmed surgical unit from W&H offers a whole new level of user comfort. The range of programmes available make it possible to preset complicated surgical procedures. The pre-programmed positions can then be selected during the procedure by means of the easy-to-read keys on the control unit or conveniently using the footswitch. This facilitates the treatment workflow and saves time. The large, illuminated display shows both the screen and the mode.

A special mode for thread-cutter functions makes the whole process even simpler: during insertion into hard bone substance, the pre-tapping reduces the compression of the jawbone while screwing in the implant. This promotes stress-free healing of the implant. Implantmed boasts a high-performance motor which can run at speeds between 300 and 40,000 rpm and a torque of 5.5 Ncm, which can be set to between 5 and 70 Ncm in combination with a reduction gear contra-angle handpiece. Together with the premium auxiliary instruments for Implantmed, W&H forges a solid basis for treatment with this unit.

Surgical straight and contra-angle handpieces

The perfect tool for every task: Implantmed boasts an extensive range of straight, contra-angle and saw handpieces.

The design and function of the contra-angle handpieces from W&H also contribute to minimally invasive treatment and optimal healing.

They are equipped with a mini-LED+, which, with its daylight-quality light and a high colour rendering index of over 90, emphasises the contrasts in the oral cavity and, in doing so, improves visual perception. The natural rendering of red shades makes it possible to identify gingival bleeding and abnormalities even more quickly. As the mini-LED+ is driven by a generator integrated in the instrument, the light is independent of the power supply. High-quality stainless steel and a scratch-resistant coating make strong and robust instruments. All W&H straight and contra-angle handpieces can be dismantled into their smallest parts without the use of tools for thorough cleaning, thermal disinfection and sterilization. The ergonomically designed straight and contra-angle handpieces also allow reduce fatigue. The perfectly calibrated and balanced weight combined with the drive motor make it possible to perform all movements with the highest precision including even the most tedious procedures.

Spray clips for the contra-angle handpieces are available for both the left and the right sides, thus allowing customized cooling for each and every treatment situation. W&H has also developed special saw handpieces with an intelligent blade geometry for conversion osteotomies and bone harvesting.

The innovative 45° contra-angle handpieces – WS-91 L G offer the dentist particular flexibility. They provide an optimal view of the treatment site and excellent access in situations where space is restricted, such as in the molar region. As such, the contra-angle handpiece is perfectly suited to the surgical extraction of wisdom teeth, tooth separations and apical resections.
